Alanna Kennedy Joins Ambitious London City Lionesses Ahead of WSL Debut

A Bold New Chapter for a Versatile Defender

On 27 August 2025, Women’s Super League (WSL) newcomers London City Lionesses completed the double signing of Australian international defender Alanna Kennedy alongside midfielder Katie Zelem, both arriving from NWSL side Angel City FC for undisclosed fees

Kennedy’s Journey: From NWSL Return to WSL Rebirth

Kennedy’s transfer adds another chapter to a truly global career. Earlier in 2025, she signed a one-year deal with Angel City FC (with an option for 2026), returning to the NWSL after a standout stint at Manchester City, where she made around 40 appearances and scored once. Her journey also includes spells with Tottenham Hotspur, Orlando Pride, Western New York Flash, and several Australian clubs—Sydney FC, Newcastle Jets, and Perth Glory—while internationally, she’s been a Matildas mainstay, earning over 130 caps and excelling in both defense and midfield.

Why the Move Makes Sense

At 30 years old, Kennedy brings a rare blend of experience and adaptability. Her strengths include defensive solidity, leadership, and versatility—all valuable traits for a club preparing its first-ever WSL campaign.

On signing, she expressed enthusiasm for joining “such an amazing club,” noting her excitement about helping a project with big ambitions right from the start. For the Lionesses—under the leadership of owner Michele Kang, who led the club’s historic promotion to the WSL as the first independent team—the acquisition signifies a statement of intent.

The takeover and aggressive transfer activity—including signings of established names like Daniëlle van de Donk, Poppy Pattinson, and Nikita Parris—demonstrates the club’s bold approach to launching a competitive WSL campaign.

Looking Ahead: Impact and Expectations

Kennedy will be tasked with anchoring the defense as the London City Lionesses navigate the challenges of the WSL. Her versatility could see her used in midfield depending on tactical need, offering the team flexibility on matchdays.

Her arrival also signals the club’s broader aspirations—not merely to survive in the WSL but to compete for honours in the near future.
