Matildas Reach AFC Women's Asian Cup Final After Thrilling 2-1 Win Over China PR

The CommBank Matildas defeated defending champions China PR 2-1 at Perth Stadium last night, booking their place in the AFC Women's Asian Cup final on home soil. It was the kind of football match that makes you hold your breath, bite your nails, then leap off the couch when it's all over.
Caitlin Foord opened the scoring on 16 minutes, burying a cutback with expert precision after a slick team move that had the Perth crowd roaring. The lead was short-lived. China's Zhang Linyan won a penalty after being brought down by Mackenzie Arnold, then converted it herself, calmly sending Arnold the wrong way. One all at the break, with everything still to play for.
The second half belonged to one woman. It was wonderful work from Kaitlyn Torpey to keep the ball under pressure, playing to Kerr who had dropped deep. Kerr found Foord, received the ball back in behind, played it around the keeper and finished from an almost impossible angle to give Australia the lead. The captain. The moment. The perfect script.
China pushed hard for an equaliser in the closing stages. The Matildas held firm. The momentum, the belief, the grit — it carried them through.
There was history made off the scoresheet too. Emily van Egmond became Australia's highest-capped footballer on the night, making her 170th national team appearance, a milestone she marked in the most fitting of settings, under the lights, in a semi-final, at home.
Head Coach Joe Montemurro acknowledged the performances have been far from perfect, but said the team's belief in themselves and their momentum has carried them to the final. Tournament football isn't always pretty. Sometimes it's about digging deep, finding the moments that matter, producing when the pressure is at its highest. Last night, the Matildas did exactly that.
Australia will now face the winner of the second semi-final between Korea Republic and Japan in the final at Stadium Australia on Saturday. A nation will be watching. A generation of girls will be watching. The Matildas have given them something extraordinary to believe in. The biggest stage of all is right here, at home, within reach.
One more win. Let's go. 💛💚
